Description

The intertwined and distributed nature of the scholarly journal landscape presents
a challenge for traditional competitive analysis, and meaningful comparisons to other
competitive spaces and industries is also hard. Even without open access the competitive
profile of the journal market is unlike any other industry, and open access has only made it
even more unique. In recent years science policy around the world has ramped up its support
for open access which is shaping the landscape in various ways, some good for increasing
competition but some also further strengthening the power of existing dominant actors. In
my talk I will attempt to unpack some of these complexities and use existing research to
highlight where the future is taking us if current circumstances persist.
