Diversity must be refocused to enable responsible organising

Abstract

This chapter argues that diversity must be refocused so that it does not blur responsibility in organisations and society. While diversity has paved the way for gender equality (United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 5) and for reducing inequalities more generally (SDG 10), it does not address power relations and systemic inequalities unless it is carefully adapted to different contexts. Diversity serves to produce and reproduce a sense of lack among those who are cast as different and “diverse.” It is embedded in the historical and epistemic context of colonialism. Only by acknowledging these shortcomings and pitfalls and by rethinking diversity can we organise responsibly for more social justice and equality across the world.
