Abstract
This paper focuses on the online German course Saksa 8 (CEFR level B2, 3 ECTS), which was developed as part of the Finland-wide project Kielivarannon vahvistaminen korkeakouluissa (KiVAKO; 2018 to 2021). The aim of the project was to develop online language courses, thereby expanding and strengthening the offer of language courses at university level throughout Finland. In the KiVAKO sub-project for German, eight German courses (CEFR level A1–B2) were developed with a total of 24 ECTS. The aim of the paper is to describe and illustrate the online German course Saksa 8. The course consists of three course modules (1 ECTS each) and contains phases of asynchronous work as well as phases in which asynchronous elements are combined with synchronous elements in the form of partner work and joint Zoom meetings. This is illustrated by the course module Deutsch in mehrsprachigen Arbeitskontexten. Against the background of student feedback and teacher observations, the paper focuses on positive aspects of such an online German course as well as on challenges, problems and suggestions for improvement.
