Abstract
The editor summarizes: "The researchers learned morality and inherited character clash as the researcher makes his everyday choices - or leaves them unmade."
My essay details some of the conflicting expectations incoming PhD students have to cope with, and attempts to describe how the researcher may, through means of an identity project, find his/her own way through this tangled web of expectations. Using relevant theories, and an empirical material of exactly n=1, the essay portrays one solution to a problem common to many PhD students.
