Abstract

While autonomous vehicle (AV) technology has gained increasing attention, literature on consumers’ adoption behavior towards AV is still limited. In this article, we explore consumers’ perceptions of a real-life, on-road experience with a SAE Level 2 semi-autonomous car and the influence on drivers’ trust beliefs and appraisal of autonomous cars. We propose that acceptance of AV technologies is based on a holistic experience consisting of cognitive absorption, cognitive appraisal, and affective appraisal.
