Institutions and Gender Empowerment in the Global Economy

This project aims at studying the relationship between economic development, institutions, formal and informal, and the socio-economic status of women. Normally, adequate economic institutions are a prerequisite for development and better institutions should improve the sitauation for both men and women. However, the development of infomal institutions may not allow women to take advantage of all opportunities they are entitled to, according to the formal rules. This project aims at providing a comparative analysis of how development and formal, as well as informal, institutions have impigned on the socio-economic position of women in different parts of the world. It is a joint project with the School of Economics, University of Queensland.
