Projektinformation
Beskrivning
The Project examines equalities and inequalities in working life in urban and rural settings of Finland. We study how intersecting social
categories, such as age/generation, ethnicity, regionality, gender and other differences, (re)onstruct marginalizations and privileges in
the changing and blurring borders of work and non-work. The Project builds on extensive knowledge on working life and ongoing,
well-functioning and trustful collaboration of the researchers and the units (UH, Hanken, JYU) over a decade.
Our aim is to provide new knowledge and practical suggestions for political decision-making for the development of the basic services
and benefit schemes specifically on care responsibilities, flexible arrangements in employment, lengthening of careers, employability of
diverse people, inclusion of ethnic and other minorities to working life, gender equality and non-discrimination, and sustainable
leadership in organisations to support work well-being and stay at work. .
Competitiveness of future Finland and its social and economic sustainability builds on equality, inclusiveness and well-being and
quality of life in the intersection of work and other life spheres. Societal challenges such as ageing and diversification the population,
work and care responsibilities, precarean careers, issues of migration and immigration, young people’s difficulties to enter labour
market, distinction between urban and rural areas, development and use of technology, discrimination of people as regards to age,
ethnicity, gender and other differences, are in the core themes in the Project.
Multiorganisational and -disciplinary Reserch Teams are 1) Shifting Care, Shifting Gaps; 2) Social Sustainability in Work
Organisations; 3) Emerging Diversities. We use multiple methods: survey, narrative and thematic analysis, content analysis,
participatory discourse analysis, media analysis, mini-ethnographies in case organisations, reflective CIAR–method. We develop
models how the stakeholders (political decision-makers, civil servants, labour market parties, regional actors, TE services,
professionals’ associations, NGOs) can be involved in the defining of the problems on equality and finding of solutions. Our
participatory approach with ongoing dialogue with stakeholders offers new kinds of possibilities to tackle problems that relate to
renewal of basic services and benefit schemes on working life. This is as a novel and innovative model for R&D in austere times.
