Earth “Observation” and the Anthropocene: Rethinking the “Observer Effect” Through the Lens of Yoga Philosophy

Sammanfattning

This paper rethinks the “observer effect” in Earth Observation (EO) research through the lens of Yoga Philosophy, drawing on insights from the Bhagavad Gita, the Patanjali Yoga Sutras, and quantum mechanics. While physics frames the “observer effect” as the alteration of a phenomenon resulting from observation or measurement, Yoga philosophy suggests that perception is shaped by the observer’s ethical disposition, cognitive conditioning, and epistemic limitations. The resulting biases can be corrected through self-awareness and disciplined practice, particularly via the eightfold path (Ashtanga Yoga). This perspective is highly relevant to EO, where the framing of questions, selection of data, and interpretation of results carry profound ethical and policy implications. Through two case studies, namely, EO-based weed management and monitoring of artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM), we illustrate how narrow epistemic framings perpetuate outdated sustainability paradigms, neglecting the balance between environmental, social, and economic goals. Drawing on principles of Viveka (discernment), Vairagya (detachment), and Karma Yoga (ethics in action), we advocate for a shift in EO research toward a more reflexive and ethically grounded approach. We argue that interdisciplinary integration of ethics, sustainability science, and Yoga philosophy can foster mindful EO research and policy, enabling humanity to become a more constructive force in the Anthropocene.
