Sammanfattning

The chapter describes the development of the European Network of Research Integrity Offices (ENRIO). ENRIO began initially as an informal network to the leading European association on issues related to research integrity and handling of cases of scientific misconduct. Since its foundation in 2008, ENRIO has become a leading force in promoting research integrity. This is due to its constantly growing membership, the experience of its contributors, their combined expertise, and the diversity of perspectives to be considered, which lead to increased awareness among diverse stakeholders. For instance, ENRIO working groups on Investigation of Research Misconduct, Teaching Responsible Conduct of Research, and Protection of Whistleblowers develop practical suggestions for improvement that take into consideration both systemic interrelationships and national characteristics of individual member countries. Also, due to sustained and effective networking, ENRIO has acquired a special leadership role on issues and positions related to research integrity at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, this can influence both the European development of effective research integrity policies and the overall strengthening of a value-based research practice and its communication to the next generation of scientists. Country-specific cases (Estonia, Finland, Germany, Lithuania) illustrate concrete developments and modifications in national regulations and procedures that have been triggered by the interorganizational cooperation in the network.
