Innovating Humanitarian Operations through the Lens of Circularity: A Trailblazing Operating Model

Purpose: This study aims to propose the ‘Circularity Driven Humanitarian Operating Model’ (CDHOM) by integrating planetary boundaries and socio-ecological considerations. The objective is to ensure the practical relevance of CDHOM, thereby enabling the formulation of a subsequent ‘Circularity Framework’ that should be adaptable, scalable and practically relevant.

Design/Methodology/Approach: The research was conducted by exploring relevant qualitative and quantitative studies, utilizing the approach of ‘Synthesis by Explanation’. The ‘study selection and evaluation’ is adopted by following the guidelines of Denyer and Tranfield (2009). The synthesis design is applied as per ‘evidence in management approach’ by Rousseau et al., (2008) and ‘realist synthesis’ by Pawson (2006). This methodology is used to explore the underlying mechanisms in fragmented diverse fields. It focuses on important evidence from studies, including researchers' interpretations, not just the results.

Findings (22): Through the application of Synthesis by Explanation, a trailblazing operating model is proposed by integrating the principles of circularity into humanitarian operations.

Practical Implications (19): Policymakers can guide their humanitarian appropriation policies based on the circularity framework provided by circularity driven humanitarian operating model integrated with planetary boundaries.

Relevance/Contribution (80): This research not only aids policymakers but also benefits industries by helping them integrate circularity into their operations, positioning them as leaders in their sector. This research also brings some unique perspective to practitioners by identifying the planetary boundaries and socio-ecological system in adopting principles of circularity in humanitarian operations. It also demonstrates a strong theoretical foundation by evolving a circular framework, that can be used by other researchers and even open a new theme of research for coming years.
