note = "In a globalizing business environment one would expect that opportunities for Finns to work abroad have increased during the past ten to twenty years and because of the increased international emphasis in society a generally positive attitude towards working abroad would seem reasonable. However, our analysis of survey data concerning changes in the attitudes of Finnish business graduates towards expatriation show some opposite trends. First, whereas the opportunity to work abroad had increased slightly between the years 1994 and 2008, the willingness to work as an expatriate had decreased dramatically. Also, the preferred time for working abroad had shortened and the reasons for taking or refusing an offer to work abroad had changed. Decreasing international mobility among MNC staff is seemingly becoming a dilemma for multinational companies. In this paper we, firstly, explore the immobility trend that multinational companies are experiencing from a Finnish perspective and, secondly, we explore whether generational cohort theory can shed some light on the changes in work and life values that seemingly are causing a staff immobility trend. In our study we compare survey data on attitudes towards expatriation among business graduates in Finland from 1994 and 2008.
